Lowlight of the day :

Virender Sehwag looked like an impostor, treading water 26 balls for four before he got the faintest of edges to a Shaun Pollock delivery.
A year ago, he was probably the most exciting batsman in world cricket.
Right now, he looks like someone with a learner's license.

Rest of South Africa v Indians, Benoni

Sehwag ruled out of first ODI

November 17, 2006

Virender Sehwag's South Africa tour has started in the worst possible manner.

Virender Sehwag has been ruled out of the first one-dayer against South Africa to be played in Johannesburg on Sunday after it was revealed that the dressing on his injured right ring finger would only come off on Sunday. "His [Sehwag's] injury is not serious as such but the stitches would come off only on Sunday morning and we hope the problem doesn't extend beyond the first game," Greg Chappell, the coach, was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.
Sehwag suffered a cut on the finger during practice ahead of India's tour match on Thursday, November 16, and required four stitches. He took no part in the game, which the Indians lost by 37 runs, but was present at the ground with his team-mates.
India begin their one-day campaign on November 19, and while Sehwag will miss the first match, it is hoped that he will be fit in time for the second match, to be played at Durban on November 22. India now have to choose between Wasim Jaffer, who would be front-runner to partner Sachin Tendulkar at the top of the order, and Dinesh Karthik, the wicketkeeper batsman. Rahul Dravid too is an option, having often in the past stepped in as opener when the situation required.

India are already without Yuvraj Singh, a key player in the one-day team, after he suffered an injury to the cruciate ligament of his left knee last month. Sehwag's latest injury got India's tour of South Africa off to an inauspicious start. Having gone through a lean patch in ODIs, Sehwag had shown signs of a revival in his most recent innings, a streaky half-century against Australia in the Champions Trophy clash at Mohali.
In some good news for the Indians, though, Chappell has fully recovered from the food poisoning that laid him low and prevented him from supervising the practice session ahead of the warm-up match.

India v England, 1st ODI, Delhi --- Sehwag certain to play in first ODI --- March 27, 2006

Virender Sehwag has recovered from his back problem and is certain to play the first one-day international against England at Delhi on Tuesday. Sehwag took part in the practice sessions on Sunday and Monday, and was cleared by John Gloster, the physiotherapist.
Earlier, there had been confusion about his fitness levels, with Niranjan Shah, the board secretary, saying that Sehwag has been cleared for the match, while GS Walia, the team's media manager, said that a final decision would only be taken closer to the match. Sehwag endured spasms during the third Test against England recently - he batted at No.7 in the second innings and failed to score.
Sehwag's presence will be a huge boost for India. Sachin Tendulkar has already been ruled out to undergo shoulder surgery in London and the loss of Sehwag would make a further dent in the batting line-up. Sehwag has already amassed more than 4000 ODI runs, with a strike-rate of 97.

Sehwag faces fitness battle for one-dayer

http://in.sports.yahoo.com/060325/137/635ot.html
Saturday March 25, 08:15 PM

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India opening batsman Virender Sehwag faces a fitness test before the first one-day international against England on Tuesday, an Indian board official said on Saturday.

The attacking Delhi player suffered back spasms during the third and final test in Mumbai, which England won by 212 runs on Wednesday to square the three-match series.

"He will be assessed in the nets tomorrow before we know whether he will be available for the game," Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Niranjan Shah told Reuters.

A shoulder injury sidelined Sehwag during the 4-1 one-day series victory in Pakistan last month.

India are already without leading batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who was ruled out of the seven-match series with a shoulder injury. Tendulkar left for London on Saturday to undergo surgery, which is expected to keep him out of action for at least two months.

Sehwag fit for first ODI against England: BCCI

http://in.sports.yahoo.com/060326/43/6361d.html
Sunday March 26, 09:00 PM

New Delhi, March 26 (IANS) Virender Sehwag, who developed back spasm during the third Test against England in Mumbai this week, has been declared fit for the first one-day international against England here Tuesday.

Indian cricket board secretary Niranjan Shah said Sunday that vice-captain Sehwag has been declared fit for the first ODI against England to be played at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium.

'Yes, he's fit to play,' Shah told IANS.

Sehwag practised with the Indian team for about three hours at the Kotla ground, even as team physiotherapist John Gloster kept a close watch on him.

However, after the practice session, G.S. Walia, a member of the board's media committee, said that a decision on Sehwag would be taken Monday.

'The support staff is observing him in the nets. He will be observed tomorrow again and a decision will be taken then,' Walia told IANS.

But Shah confirmed that Sehwag, who scored six in the first innings and did not field in England's second innings in the third Test, would play the Delhi match.

Since Sehwag had not fielded in the entire second innings, he batted at No. 7 in the second innings and failed to score as England won the match by 212 runs to draw the three-Test series 1-1.

Sehwag, a local boy, had also missed the second Test against Sri Lanka in Delhi in December owing to a throat infection, much to the disappointment of the crowd.
